Corel Painter is piece of software for creating digital paintings and drawings. Its main strength is its "natural media" feature (composed of sophisticated algorithms), which causes the brush tools to interact with the paper textures in a very realistic way: if the artist presses hard, she gets a wide, dark stroke; if he presses lightly, his brush just skims the top of the grain of the paper, producing a narrower, light stroke. Painter's libraries contain hundreds if not thousands of paper textures, ranging from the very realistic "French Watercolor Paper" to the weird and wonderful "Spiders on Caffeine." There are also hundreds of brushes, charcoal, pastel, all kinds of pens, watercolor, oil, marker, etc. Painter is best used with a pressure-sensitive Wacom digitizing tablet and stylus. It is mostly compatible with Photoshop (creates tifs and psds, as well as its own native rif files). For Second Life, it produces superior transparent textures. In Real Life, it is used for illustration and fine art paintings and drawings which can be output as ink jet prints.
